There
is a long list of symptoms of panic
attacks, including emotional, mental,
perceptual, and physical symptoms. Some of the
most frequent emotional symptoms include many
heightened fears, such as fear of a serious
illness, fear of death, fear of failure, fear
of going insane, fear of living, fear of losing
control, and fear that the panic attack will
not stop. Other emotional symptoms include an
intense feeling of being scared, flashbacks to
a previous trigger, and terror that something
horrible is going to happen soon and that you
cannot avoid it.
Some common mental symptoms include
avoidance behavior, agoraphobia, fear of
impending death or doom, feeling of emotional
exclusion, feeling like you are going insane,
feeling like no one understands, feeling like
nothing is real, feeling of impaired vision,
feeling out of control, intense frightening
realizations of reality, racing or irrational
thoughts, loss of the ability to react
logically to external stimuli, loss of
cognitive ability, and loud internal
dialogue.

Perceptual symptoms include apparent temporal slowing down
or speeding up, depersonalization or dissociation, dream-like
sensations, feeling that you have no free will, heightened
senses, and tunnel vision.
Physical symptoms include dry mouth, chest pain, choking or
smothering sensations, exhaustion, feelings of claustrophobia,
grinding of the teeth, headaches, heart palpitations, hot
and/or cold flashes, hyperventilation, itching or burning
sensations, lightheadedness, localized numbness, muscle spasms,
nausea, stomach discomfort, sweating, shortness of breath,
vertigo, trembling, symptoms of feeling like you are having a
heart attack, weakness, temporary blindness, and ringing in the
ears.
As you can no doubt surmise from the long list, panic
attacks can come in many shapes and sizes and often people
don’t even recognize that they are having one. Those who have
had them say that panic attacks are one of the worst
experiences they have ever been through. Many report that they
feel as if they have lost complete control of themselves and
that their body will not respond to their mental commands.
Panic attacks are our “fight or flight” response, which is
found in all animal species. This response is how some
individuals react to stress, including some animals—they “shut
down” instead of running or fighting. We have come a long way
since the days in which predators were trying to eat us, so our
response has changed. These days, we have the stress of dealing
with modern problems such as financial issues or raising our
family. We no longer have something to run away from or
physically combat, though some who experience panic attacks say
that they do feel like running away from the location in which
they had their panic attack, which is a completely
understandable biological “flight” response.
Conclusion
If you are experiencing any of these many symptoms, you
should visit a licensed professional that can advise you on
whether you are having panic attacks or experiencing another
medical issue. Panic attacks are a frequent problem that
psychologists know how to successfully treat. You can put a
stop to panic attacks early on by recognizing the symptoms of
panic attacks.
