There
are many ways of treating anxiety
attacks available, but if you want to
deal with your problem you first need to
understand where it comes from. Anxiety
attacks, also known as panic attacks, are
episodes of fear, anxiety or panic accompanied
by physical, mental, perceptual, or emotional
symptoms. The symptoms that accompany anxiety
attacks can be quite overwhelming to those that
experience them and they often describe it
feeling as if they have lost total control of
their faculties. The good news is that there
are a variety of treatments available that can
help you deal with anxiety attacks and possible
nullify them altogether.
The easiest way to treat anxiety attacks is
with medication. Understandably, nobody wants
to go on medication for so-called “mental
problems,” but if you are having anxiety
attacks you need to take that step and get
yourself some help. Recognize that what you are
experiencing has its roots in biology, that it
is not your fault, and that you need help
dealing with it. Many other people are having
the same issues and take the prescribed
medication, allowing them to get on with their
lives. It is just like any other medical
issue.

The best medications on the market to treat anxiety attacks
are sertraline (popularly known as Zoloft) and paroxetine
(popularly known as Paxil). These medications are
antidepressants and have been approved by the FDA for long-term
treatment of anxiety attacks. They can sometimes actually get
rid of your anxiety attacks entirely and any side effects are
mild. Zoloft and Paxil are relatively gentle medications and
won’t cause you to lose control of yourself or change your
personality or anything else you may have heard. A couple of
other equally effective medications available for anxiety
attack treatment are clonazepam (popularly known as Klonopin)
and alprazolam (popularly known as Xanax). Klonopin and Xanax
are both potent short-term medications and you should therefore
strictly follow their prescribed usage (as always) when taking
them.
So can you deal with anxiety attacks through
counseling? The answer is yes. Some who suffer from
anxiety attacks have found that counseling alone has allowed
them to cope. Some find that by simply speaking to a licensed
professional they gain insights into their attacks and are then
able to deal with them. Although it is often hard for people to
admit that they have such problems, you should not feel
embarrassed or ashamed. Understand that your counselor has
undoubtedly treated patients with much more serious
psychological problems than yours and will not sit in judgment
of you; he or she is just there to help you. If you decide to
just go with counseling, just be aware that it does not work as
fast as medication. Counseling can be just as effective, but
lacks the instant biological punch of medication.
If you are having anxiety attacks, you should definitely be
treated for them. There is no reason for you to continue to
suffer. Mental health professionals have been treating anxiety attacks
successfully for many years now and can help you get on with
your life.
